Orchestra Conducting Bio

Roderick MacDonald is an American conductor with an international career spanning Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has served as Music Director of the Worcester Symphony Orchestra since 2014, where he has led wide-ranging symphonic, choral, operatic, and film-music repertoire, while playing a central role in artistic planning, community engagement, and institutional growth.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, MacDonald began his professional life as a trumpet soloist and orchestral principal at the highest European level. In 1988, he was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Leipzig Opera, and St. Thomas Church Leipzig by legendary Music Director Kurt Masur—a position he held for 17 years. During this period, he collaborated with many of the world’s leading conductors and appeared extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.

Alongside his orchestral career, MacDonald established himself early as a conductor. From 2000 to 2012, he served as Music Director of the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra, leading more than a decade of performances and recordings, including over ten commercially released CDs. He also served for more than twenty years as Music Director of the Stelzen Festival Orchestra, where he conducted symphonic, operatic, and contemporary repertoire in a festival setting.

As a guest conductor and trumpeter, MacDonald has performed internationally with ensembles including the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Virtuosi Saxonia, and the Bach Collegium Munich, among many others. His deep experience as a principal orchestral musician continues to inform his conducting, particularly in rehearsal efficiency, orchestral balance, and collaborative leadership.

MacDonald has been a finalist for major conducting positions, including Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and Associate Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He holds a diploma in orchestral conducting from the Leipzig Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, and was awarded the prestigious Leonard Bernstein Fellowship at Tanglewood Music Center.

In recognition of his artistic contributions, he was awarded the honorary title of Kammermusiker by the City of Leipzig. Unusually, MacDonald also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island, a background that complements his analytical and structural approach to musical interpretation.

Maestro MacDonald commands a broad repertoire encompassing opera, oratorio, concertos, symphonic masterworks, and contemporary and film music. He is widely respected for combining European orchestral tradition with American versatility, and for fostering performances that balance precision, warmth, and communicative clarity.
